Terrene was founded in 2001 as a project involving two long-distance collaborators, John Dylan Mulhausen and Brad Rose. In 2002, it became an active live band in Seattle, releasing the record The Indifferent Universe in 2007, produced by Phil Ek (Band of Horses, The Dodos, The Shins, Built to Spill).
The 5-member band had disintegrated by the time of the record's release, leaving John as the only remaining resident in Seattle. Rather than pull the record, John shot two videos for the album and then took his laptop and guitar on the road for a 6-week North American tour. The efforts paid off, with good reviews, and "Unwelcome" getting television play by MTV and HBO, and finally, a "Best Indie Music Video" prize at the 2008 Yahoo! Video Awards. But shortly after, their label, Wax Orchard records, was dropped from their distribution partner Koch, and the record promotion activity ceased.
The next year, The Indifferent Universe was released for free on terrene.net in mp3 form, and reissued in physical and paid-download form through CD Baby, making it available worldwide at pretty much any internet music retailer.
John also announced the Open Source Project in 2009, through which all Terrene music will be released with a free download option, and the multi-track masters will also be made available for open collaboration between John and any interested remixers. Plans to assemble another live band in 2010 are underway.
At the moment, Terrene is the only "Open Source" rock project in the world.
