Surround Sound Recording Techniques

Recording Surround Sound on a budget?

...No?

Well, I am, as part of the Open Source Project. All new Terrene music will be recorded for the 24-bit/96khz/Surround Sound format.

And this is how:

The Mulhausen Rule of Recording Surround Sound Audio Via Triangulation:

When recording for surround sound, the microphone(s) capturing the instrument from close range must be accompanied, at the least, by a stereo "room" image produced by using a microphone pair that uses the 45-degree rule.

Triangulation is important because a single mono signal does not create a convincing enough sound image when panned about inside a 360-degree surround sound field. Instead, the sound is very isolated, lonely, and lacking in impact, as it is being rendered in a very precise place in the listening field by very small speakers.

This rule of triangulation uses natural acoustic techniques to create convincing surround placement in the mix, by making the surround sound field a virtual room in which sounds reverberate realistically, stretching across the width and depth available in surround sound.

IN = instrument being recorded.
M# = Microphone, where "#" is the microphone number. Assume the
mic is pointing straight "North."

IN
M1

M2 M3

The Mulhausen Rule of Mixing Triangulated Audio Images By Quadrant

When placing a three-channel signal that was recorded using the rule of triangulation into a surround sound mix, the surround sound field must be mentally divided into quadrants that govern the seperation of the room mic signals and the close microphone signal across the 2-dimensional aural plane of modern surround sound.

Imagine that a triangle was painted onto the surface of a coin, with its joints labelled M1 at the top, and then M2 and M3 at the bottom. As the close instrument mic (M1) is placed in the mix, imagine rotating that coin so that M2 and M3 both fell inside the "invisible box" of the surround sound field.

Here's an example of what that would look like if a triangulated image were placed in a surround sound mix's extreme Front-Left. The "coin" mentioned earlier has clearly been rolled counter-clockwise:

M# = Microphone signal from above example, numbered accordingly by #.
| and - demark the invisible box that defines the surround sound field.

--------------
M1 M2

M3
--------------

To define what's really happening when you visualize rolling a coin with a triangle on it, the concept of quadrants comes in. Imagine dividing the surround sound field into quadrants (XX, XY, YX, YY). Keeping that in mind, the rule is as simple as this: Whatever quadrant the close instrument mic is occupying, the two adjacent quadrants receive the stereo room mics. Here's where we must leave the analogy of the coin behind: the room mics must then be panned to the extremity of their respective quadrant, in order for them to use completely seperate speakers and avoid phase cancellation.

This must remain the case even when the close instrument mic, M1, responsible for providing 90% of the perceived audio, is moved to be more towards the center, as illustrated below. Remember: M2 and M3 would phase if routed to the same audio channel, and M1's travel to the center of the field means that the rear-right speaker is now, ever-so faintly, contributing to the image for M1. However, it is not, for M2. Thus, the perceived effect is that the sound is close by the user, reverberating slightly off the left and forward walls.

--------------
         M2
  M1

M3
--------------

And if the engineer, busily mixing, continued to move M1 in that direction so that it completely crossed from the front-left to the rear-right, that would, in the name of having the most accurate, clean, and deep-sounding surround sound image, produce:

--------------
         M3

       M1
M2
--------------

Always remember that M2 and M3 must be panned as though they were bound by invisible glue to the extreme corners of the surround sound field, and harbor a natural aversion to their being in the same quadrant as M1. As a result, you'll be rewarded with a natural-sounding, phase-free surround image that only took 3 channels to produce.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR CENTERED AUDIO SIGNALS:

The two big corner cases are those times where M1 is perfectly centered *in some way.* The two ways that an audio image can be centered, and the mixing placements that compensate, are:

1) Centered on the X (Left/Right) or Y (Front/Back) axis, but not both: The room mics will be in the two quadrants not occupied by the two which contain the close instrument mic signal. In the below example, M1 is being shared by the two lower quadrants, resulting in the opposing quadrants receiving the room mic signals:

--------------
M2 M3

    M1
--------------

2) Centered on both the X and Y axis (dead center in the surround sound field): Next time use five mics and make a domino pattern with M1 in the center. But this time: Align M3 and M4 at opposite ends of the Y axis, along the X axis. Then place M1 at the center of the X axis. Like so:

--------------
    M3

    M1

    M2
--------------

The image here will be confusing for the listener, as it will have depth, but no width, however it will at least be sonically balanced and in the center of the mix.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR FRONT-HEAVY MIXERS:

Naturally, this is all written from the point of view of a technical study in imaging audio correctly in a surround sound field using as few microphones as possible, where all speakers recreating the surround sound field are assumed to be equal in ability and volume. In the real world, surround sound speaker systems of the sort in home theaters today are extremely "front-heavy," and the likely mixing strategy for many will be to use the front channel's additional center speaker for the isolation and greater clarity of key song elements like vocals and snare, and to merely use the back speakers for "depth information" like room mic signals.

If the engineer is producing front-heavy mixes that use rear speakers "for depth" (i.e. room sounds, reverb, audience noise, but no instrument detailing), the likely scenario is the quadrants XX and XY will contain all the close instrument mics (the M1's of their respective instruments) and quadrants YX and YY will contain the M2s and M3s, respectively (and exclusively), using strategic balancing of the M2 and M3 signals to acheive the desired placement in the surround sound field.

As a final note, anyone with a DVD player can enjoy 24-bit/Surround Sound audio fidelity, all you need is a surround sound speaker system (a $100 gamer sound system will do) and an optical cable that goes from your A/V System/DVD Player/HDTV's optical output socket, to said speaker system. The total cost for a cheap DVD player, cheap surround system and optical cable is something like $150-200 USD.

And I could think of no good reason. So, here it is, and happy new year from Terrene!

Standard "demo boilerplate" applies: Terrene reserves the right to slice, dice, rearrange, molest, taunt, ridicule, and generally defile this song, by means including (but not limited to): never recording this song for real, changing all the parts so that it's not really even this song when it comes out, hiring T-Pain to add backup vocals to the album version, or having the album version Rickroll listeners just at the moment it seems to be getting interesting. But yes, early work in progress; this is the first recording of this song. Still, I like where it's at, and don't feel too much needs to change. Going to do a couple things to reduce repetition, I think.

Let me know what you think: terreneisaband@gmail.com

Recording ready to begin!

I've narrowed what basically amounts to Terrene's second album to a final selection of 14 tracks, and have pretty much got my recording setup ready to go.

For those who missed it, Terrene's next 14 songs will be released 2 songs at a time as volumes of "Open Source Music", over a total of seven releases. Each set of 2 new songs will be on an album-length CD whose remaining space will be filled with the multitrack data for the 2 songs, as well as one bonus track that will remain exclusive to that release. Additionally, the 2 new songs will always be posted for free online.

Once the material is released, remix entries will be accepted from anyone and everyone who submits one, and I'll help develop them when needed, providing cool overdubs or whatever else the song (or remix artist) requires of me. The goal is to get a really neat alternate version of each song in the can, because...!

Once all seven volumes of "Open Source Music" have been released, a two-sided CD/DVD disc will be released, compiling everyone's efforts in one magnificent release. The CD side will compile the 14 new songs that were put out during the project's seven-release run. The DVD will have 1) those same 14 new songs in remixed form (thanks to said remixer efforts), 2) DVD Audio of the 14 new songs presented in 24-bit/96k Uncompressed/Linear PCM Stereo, and 3) DVD Audio of the 14 songs in 24-bit/96k/5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. It remains to be seen whether I'll have room to put more data than the remixes on the DVD side, but if I do have room, I'd like to put FLACs and MP3s of all the versions of the record on there.

Yes, this is a very strange way to release music. But, I intend to stick to it and see where it goes. My hopes are that the remixers' creativity will make an awesome "alternate album," that having the songs online for free will suit everyone, and that the CD/DVD collection release inspires other artists to stop "working in the mp3 format" and think about presenting their work in the most vivid and immersive (if not convenient) way that they can.

In the meantime, building a new live lineup will take a bit of time. I'm hoping to be playing shows locally around the Summer to get loosened up and help the band gel. That's probably around the time the first volume of "Open Source Music" will drop, as well.

At any rate, perhaps this will all be most easily explained by my posting the (preliminary!) tracklist for "Open Source Music, Volume 1:"

1. "Disharmony" (a-side)
2. "And We Know" [working title] (b-side)
3. Media Sift (Through Heart Rises) [Phil Ek mix] (bonus track)*
4-???: Multitrack data for tracks #1 and #2.

* will remain exclusive to OSMv1.

Questions/Comments/To collaborate on OSM stuff, email terreneisaband@gmail.com

Terrene is going open-source!

Hi everyone! John from Terrene here.

I've decided to announce the approach that Terrene is taking from here on out. It's unusual, so bear with me.

Terrene is now a do-it-yourself, and what's more, open-source project. I intend to always provide a free download option for all Terrene music from here on out, and I also intend to provide the multi-track masters for all of Terrene's music from here on out, so people can learn, cover and remix to their heart's content.

There are two prime directives for the open-source project, which will kick off with the release of "Open Source Music, Volume 1" this year:

1) Music is, in and of itself, like any other piece of information that longs to be free, and sharing on the internet costs the artist nothing.

2) Music is participatory.

The term "open-source" is used very deliberately, here.

I want to share Terrene's music under GNU-like terms, which allows for free personal use (but reserves paid licensing rights for commercial use). And, I want to provide the nearest thing I have to "source code," which is the multi-track masters for Terrene's music.

In doing these two simple things, I seek to reach out to everyone from the person who just wants a little bit of music to get through their day, but doesn't have a lot of money to do so, to the deep fan who wants to do a cover or a remix.

THE FUTURE:

New music will be released in single format, with an A-side and a B-side. These singles will be released in the usual formats (CD, digital), as well as for free download!

Additionally, these singles will be accompanied with an album-length CD that, when ripped or downloaded, gives the listeners the complete multi-tracks for both the A-side and B-side tracks. An example tracklisting might be:

Terrene - "Open Source Music Volume 1"
1. Drums (stereo)
2. Left channel: Guitar 1, right channel: Guitar 2.
3. Vocals (stereo)
4. Left channel: bass. Right channel: keyboard.

And there you have it. Ripping that CD would give users everything they need to remix, learn, or cover Terrene's music. The multi-track albums will be distributed exclusively via CDBaby.

If that isn't enticing enough: Once an albums' worth of singles and b-sides have been released, I will compile them into an album-length release and, as a bonus disc, offer a "favorite remixes/covers" CD that has an "alternate version" of the album, made up of the material that the fans created with the multi-tracks.

Why? To stress the point that music is particaptory, and music longs to be free, of course! My versions will be pretty good, but I'm so excited to see what artists with completely different backgrounds can do. I will listen to everything sent my way, and I'll even collaborate if you need me to. ;)

I'm very excited about this new project, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Keep in touch! terreneisaband@gmail.com.

Love,

-john
